bright ideas

sam grawe, dwell magazine's editor-in-chief, speaks with blog designboom on everything from the publication's history to how they have kept the magazine in print while maintaining a great online presence.  grawe states that a quote from eliel saarinen influences the way in which the magazine creates content:  "always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context, a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan."  the magazine celebrates its tenth anniversary this fall and plans for the future include broadening their scope to incorporate more about the neighborhoods the modern homes they feature are located in.  love it.

sonic boom

partners & spade has the one of the coolest inspiration photo blogs around.  the marketing and branding company who also produces films, books, apparel and conceptual products has done work with some of the brightest and best including target and lighting company roll & hill.  based in manhattan, the front of their studio serves as an art gallery.  sounds like the best job ever.

home grown

milwaukee based furniture design duo misewell showed pieces from their collection at design within reach last night.  the brothers, who won the best new designers award at the international contemporary furniture fair in 2009, showed some new additions to their collection including a bar stool and lamp.  also featured were some early cardboard prototypes to show the design process.  a job well done!

born free

here is a little color and pattern inspiration from this month's fader magazine.  artist mia looks amazing in a pink lace top against a natural green background.  check out the website featuring her new cd, maya.  i also love this marc by marc jacobs color loop sweater.  i would kill for one but can't find it in this color anywhere.

doing it so good

its not very often that i check out the blog design*sponge (clearly not my style) but i just happened to stumble upon some amazing services that the author, grace bonney, is beginning to offer other creative bloggers.  in a series of youtube videos, bonney describes the history of the blog and how she is making a living doing what she loves.  check out 1, 2, 3 and 4.  the design*sponge website also offers some great tips about blogging.  above is my favorite post featuring neon objects for under $100.  holler.

and ever

someday i am going to create a room inspired by my favorite poster of all time.  for like ever by tracy jenkins was featured on the cover domino magazine years ago and i get the same fuzzy feeling every time i see it.  you can get one too for $60.

catch you on the flipside

here is a little advertising from moroso featuring my beautiful backside by design duo doshi levien.  the cozy kitschy seating uses both wool and silk fabrics to create an ironic mix of texture and is available in a variety of sizes and colors.  not often is such emphasis put on the design aesthetic of the backside of a couch and doshi levien manages to give the same attention to detail to the front side creating a very dynamic piece. the designers create a seamless mix of cultural influences in their work, combining nipa doshi's indian inspiration and jonathan levien's european industrial background.  the seating is inspired by a painting of a princess surrounded by pebble shaped cushions in her palace seen here.  love it!

that was then

this is now.  interface flor was a hit at neocon 2010 promoting their "memphis under foot" collection, inspired by the 1980's art and design movement of the memphis group.  i have been seeing the trend creeping back into design style for awhile now but have been avoiding acknowledging it.  i have despised this style of design for years.  i hate primary colors and building block shapes.  credit is given to the memphis group's ettore sottsass for challenging traditional ideas of "good taste" by using bright colors and bold patterns.  interface flor created a blast from the past in their chicago showroom and even played music videos from la roux, including the very memphis "bulletproof."  interface flor and la roux are making memphis grow on me.

i inspire me

wallpaper magazine is the best. they have an online gallery space called wallspace that they invite designers to share what inspires their work. my favorite is tokujin yokiosha's. his inspiration is definitely in line with his work.

front, back and side to side

can i just say how much i #1 love moroso and #2 admire the ladies of front design. they designed the "wood chair" by using the wood beaded seat covers taxi cab drivers use on their car seats as inspiration. the chair launched at milan design week 2010. so rad. i'm totally digging it. via designboom
