bright ideas
sam grawe, dwell magazine's editor-in-chief, speaks with blog designboom on everything from the publication's history to how they have kept the magazine in print while maintaining a great online presence. grawe states that a quote from eliel saarinen influences the way in which the magazine creates content: "always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context, a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan." the magazine celebrates its tenth anniversary this fall and plans for the future include broadening their scope to incorporate more about the neighborhoods the modern homes they feature are located in. love it.

land of the free
textile company maharam's current print advertising features a digital project called "along banks of rivers high"by the brooklyn based artist brian alfred. the piece can be installed as wallpaper but is meant to be seen as a piece of art. i saw the piece in person at neocon and it was absolutely gorgeous, a mix of vivid greens in a geometric pattern inspired by the lay of the land.

doing it so good
its not very often that i check out the blog design*sponge (clearly not my style) but i just happened to stumble upon some amazing services that the author, grace bonney, is beginning to offer other creative bloggers. in a series of youtube videos, bonney describes the history of the blog and how she is making a living doing what she loves. check out 1, 2, 3 and 4. the design*sponge website also offers some great tips about blogging. above is my favorite post featuring neon objects for under $100. holler.

what time is it
talk about a blast from the past! swatch watch has pushed their way back into the limelight. i'm feeling a bit nostalgic about this as i have fond memories of my very first swatch watch with its minty green band which was stolen by a fellow 3rd grader. above is a photo i snapped of an inside cover ad from july's coilhouse magazine for swatch watch's colour codes collection. swatch has been pushing the campaign hard and put out a challenge to some of the top fashion and design magazines out there including wallpaper, nylon, i-D and v magazine (photo from the spread shown above). facebook fans were then asked to vote on their favorite campaign. and the winner is...yoho magazine. you can get your own colour code watch for $50.

the grass is really greener
kartell's new advertising campaign follows the green outdoorsy advertising trend. the ad features products in pinky orange, orange red and kartell red colorways that are set up in a collage to form the letter k. i'm digging it.

and ever
someday i am going to create a room inspired by my favorite poster of all time. for like ever by tracy jenkins was featured on the cover domino magazine years ago and i get the same fuzzy feeling every time i see it. you can get one too for $60.
catch you on the flipside
here is a little advertising from moroso featuring my beautiful backside by design duo doshi levien. the cozy kitschy seating uses both wool and silk fabrics to create an ironic mix of texture and is available in a variety of sizes and colors. not often is such emphasis put on the design aesthetic of the backside of a couch and doshi levien manages to give the same attention to detail to the front side creating a very dynamic piece. the designers create a seamless mix of cultural influences in their work, combining nipa doshi's indian inspiration and jonathan levien's european industrial background. the seating is inspired by a painting of a princess surrounded by pebble shaped cushions in her palace seen here. love it!

do or die
i almost thought neon was dead.
thank god for vivienne westwood and brazilian design group neon. at the spring/summer 2011 fashion show westwood's models were made up with bright eyeshadows and neon presented a collection of head to toe neon pieces. neon colors are still in full force but with a bit less fluorescence. pastel neon is the new hotness.
